Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) released its "Honeycomb" 3.0 Android software development kit (SDK) Wednesday just as Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL) hinted that its long-rumored iPad 2 launch event will happen next week.
Twitter Inc. is buzzing with talk about the March 2 Apple launch in San Francisco. Some commentators are wondering how the iPad 2's debut will overshadow the arrival of tablets using the Android 3.0 OS.
"Apple is holding a special event next week to announce that 300+ Android tablets will be DOA this year," quips BGR's Zach Epstein on his Twitter feed.
What they say
Specifically, PC World suggests that the Pad 2 will definitely divert attention from the launch of the Motorola Inc. (NYSE: MOT) Xoom Thursday. The Xoom is the first tablet to arrive using the tablet-specific version of the Android operating system. (See When Will Thunder Strike Verizon?)
Nobody exactly knows what the specs of the iPad 2 will be yet. That hasn't stopped Wired from putting together a wish list of features for the new version of the best-selling tablet.
But if Android developers are concerned by iPad 2, it isn't showing yet. The Android developers' blog has just unveiled a parcel of new material centered around the OS.
